Ancestral Acknowledgements

In humble acknowledgment of my great-great-grandmother Susan Summers-Irons 1859-1951, a Gullah Geechee granny midwife who served mothers and welcomed new life in the 18/1900s. Her legacy flows through my blood, a connection I carried unknowingly until discovering her story years into my own path as a birth worker. Her maiden name, Summers, lives on as my middle name - an ancestral thread woven into my being before I knew its significance.

I honor the wisdom, strength, and dedication of the Gullah Geechee granny midwives who preserved traditional birthing knowledge through generations. Their sacred work of supporting mothers and bringing forth new life continues to guide and inspire my practice. In carrying forward this legacy of service, I acknowledge those who walked this path before me, whose knowing lives in my bones and guides my hands.

Her image stands at the center of my practice's logo, a reminder, an offering, and a commitment to her spirit that moves through me. This acknowledgment serves as a living testament to the continuity of traditional birth wisdom, connecting past to present, ancestor to descendant, in the eternal cycle of bringing new life into this world.
